Woman Hair Stylist

Ancient samurais entered the battle with their prized swords, a symbol of their pride on the battlefield. Now you can accelerate your hairdressing career with the present day Japanese samurai sword. Believe in yourself. Believe in your cutting tools. These handcrafted Japanese scissors will help you progress to the next level in your career.

Today's demanding hair fashion requires a scissor to be an extension of a hair designer's hand and an expression of their creativity. Opened and closed tens of thousands of times, a scissor must not only retain accuracy and sharpness, but meet each individual's ongoing expectations. For these reasons every scissor is handmade to exacting standards by skilled craftsmen. The end result are scissor edges created in the tradition of the Japanese sword, supported by the unique forging techniques of Sanjo City. KEIUN scissors are our traditional craftsman's ultimate expression of a cutting tool created to enable the hair designer to achieve their ultimate hair fashion.

KEIUN are hair-cutting scissors created with the beauty and edge of a Japanese sword under the supervision of Mr. Shigeyoshi Iwasaki, a highly-reputed Sanjo craftsman of Japanese swords. He did significant research on materials of Japanese swords, "Tamahagane", and spent his entire life making superb blades, using both scientific research and practice. He is also famous for his various significant activities such as research on blades in Shoso-in, an important historic building of the Nara period, and technical support toward developing countries as a craftsman. In 1998 he was invited to the 50th memorial Munich International Trade Fairs and demonstrated Japanese traditional forging technique and has received several prestigious awards. In reality and in name, he truly is a master of his craft.

These scissors have layered structures for improved dampening capacity, resulting in an original cutting feel and reduced cutting shock to the hands.

It is said that layered steel was first created in India and so highly prized across the Middle East, that the method of smithing eventually took the name of the city of Damascus. Swords made from Damascus were brought back to Europe during the Christian Crusades and enjoyed considerable popularity as one of the mysteries of the Orient. Damascus steel can be categorized into two groups, European and Japanese. European Damascus reveals its layers cleanly on a black surface, while the layers in Japanese Damascus steel overlap to form a cloudy appearance. As opposed to a machine-like pattern, the organic and mysterious pattern of our Japanese Damascus scissors reveals the Zen of Japanese beauty. Each scissor has its own "face" and the natural flow of the pattern running from the edge of the blade to the edge of the hand-grip becomes the motif of the Japanese name, KEIUN.

All of our scissors are carefully hand forged in Sanjo, Japan. Sanjo is a small city in the center of Niigata Prefecture and is known as a metalworks town. Many master blacksmiths live in the area and are known for their uncompromising quality and raw talents in the art of metallurgy and smithing. With traditions of craftsmanship beginning in the 1620’s, Sanjo is easily recognized for producing excellent handcrafted edged tools and is considered one of the most famous metal working centers in the world. Notably, the work of our artisans at KEIUN is met with great enthusiasm by hair designers not only in their home country of Japan, but globally and now for the first time, Canada.

KEIUN is proud to announce they are now an official founding member and participating company in the Japanese organization HSC (Hairdressing Scissors Consortium). HSC is an organization aimed towards strict quality and standards of scissor manufacturing supported by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry as part of a “Japan Brand Development Project" started in 2017. Through proper management, authentication and certification a scissor manufacturer must meet a rigorously maintained standard of quality. In addition to this, a strict criteria and indication of origin from the beginning stages to end processes of manufacturing must be met to be truly and authentically 'Made in Japan'.

As with any high-quality product, daily proper care should be taken in order to ensure the longevity and performance of the piece. For perfectly balanced scissors, correct use, tension, and maintenance is paramount.

  • Only use KEIUN scissors for cutting hair to avoid dulling or damaging the blade.

  • after every haircut and at the end of each working day, thoroughly clean your scissors by removing any debris and carefully wiping the blades with a chamois.

  • After cleaning, oil your scissors with a small drop of quality scissor oil (not clipper oil) on each blade around the balance face just above the center screw. Open and close repeatedly to spread the oil. Wipe up excess oil with a chamois.

  • When not in use, store your scissors in a proper case or stand to keep them dry and to avoid damage.

  • We recommended to have your scissors sharpened by our reputable professional at Edge Works Performance, as an inexperienced sharpener may cause unwanted damage of the scissors or blades. I.R.M Consultants Inc. is partnered with Edge Works Performance to provide our clients with quality professional sharpening. I.R.M Consultants Inc. is not liable for any damage to scissors done by a third party sharpener. For more information visit Edge Works Performance.
